However each time when I tried to visit the web site, I always got an 'access denied' error. Checking the error log under /var/log/httpd, I got lines like:

[Mon Jan 30 20:01:09 2006] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] (13)Permission denied: access to / denied
As I believed the permissions on the DocumentRoot are correctly set (0755, which is quite standard), I suspected the bad-famed SELinux was doing its trick again.

This time I was just doing the "brutal" job: disable SELinux protection on httpd completely:

setsebool -P httpd_disable_trans 1,

and

/sbin/service httpd restart.

Then... exactly as what I expected, the "access denied" error disappeared.
Now what an ironic story: I initially wanted to secure my whitebox with SELinux, yet I finished with completely disabling it on ftp, samba, and http services. I really wonder how many end-users are really utilizing SELinux in a serious way...

Copy entire folder in Linux

To copy an entire folder (directory tree) in Linux, use the following method:

mkdir target_directorycd source_directorycp -ap . target_directory
Other options:
cp -apv . target_directory (for verbose results)\
cp -ap . target_directory (for unix)

More info:- linuxguide.sourceforge.net
CategoriesUnix/Linux Reference

Solved: Outlook hidden OLK** Temporary Folders - how do you list them?

1ST STEP

Use your registry editor to navigate to the following location (you may need to replace the number 11 with your applicable version of Office)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security

There will be a registry key called "OutlookSecureTempFolder" Check the value that is assigned to this key which should be the the true location of Outlooks temp files directory which is different from your regular Windows temp files directory. This is the directory that you want to delete the temp files from. If you are unable to locate the registry key value mentioned above by navigating to the location provided you should be able to search the registry by opening the registry editor and clicking EDIT >> FIND and then typing in the name of the registry key (OutlookSecureTempFolder)

If deleting the files from the directory doesn't work try creating a new temp files directory for Outlook to use and change the path on the registry key above to point to the new directory.

2ND STEP

That is by design I think. In Microsoft's infinite wisdom you can view the Temporary Internet Files folder in windows explorer but cannot see the temporary subfolders beneath it. In the command shell you cannot see the Temporary Internet Files directory but you can change directory by typing: C:\>cd "Temporary Internet Files" <enter>, and then type: C:\>dir <enter> to view its contents in list format. You should be able to see the subfolders at this point and use the CD command to view the contents of each. You can use: C:\>rd /s to remove the OLK folder and all of its contents. Type: rd /? for command usage.

There may be another way to do this, I'm just shooting from the hip here. I'm pretty comfortable with the command shell and have used it for years. However, be very careful!! There is no recycle bin in the command shell!

Export Outlook contacts and Import into Evolution

The past two weeks have seen little blogging so I feel I must divulge a little. I was on a long road trip visiting Chicago, Chippewa Falls, northern Minnesota, and Minneapolis. It was exhausting. We painted a cabin which was too much work while you’re on the lake. Mason had fun though. I have to say, I wish broadband had a larger presence in the U.S. It’s a different world out there and I appreciate my cable speeds that much more.

Evolving your contact list to Evolution from Outlook.
What thistweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu.

1) Go to Start then Run
2) Type ‘Regedit’ then click ‘Ok’
3) Find “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop”
4) Select “MenuShowDelay”
5) Right click and select “Modify
6) Reduce the number to around “100"This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to “0? but it can make windows really hard to useas menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood (REBOOT MAYBE NEEDED)

Sample .bash_profile login script

# login script of Wayne Pollock
#Last updated: 5/1/07
# LEVEL is used to destinguish between login shell
# windows (root windows) and other shells, because
# a different prompt is used in each case. Generally, you should be on the lookout to the health of your PST file. We can't afford to be interrupted with our work just because we can't access our e-mail. Just recently one of Pasona's staff was having problem accessing her email, it turned out that her PST has gone 2gb+ in size. So accessing her email was such a pain in the ass.

Fortunately microsoft has this tool called PST2GB. I copied the 2gb+ pst and downloaded the tool and installed it to one of our computers in the Matador Office.

Run the PST2GB as shown below.

Just click on Browse and locate the Original PST File. Next is Click on Create, this will be the name of the reduced PST file. By default the number of Megabytes to trim off the end is 25 MB. We have no choice but to delete part of your PST, our aim is to be able to open the pst - Email. In our case, I named the reduced pst to fixed, and deleted some 250MB. Then click on Start. The deletion process may take a couple of minutes or hours even depending on the speed of your machine.

After running the PST2GB tool, you need to run the INBOX REPAIR TOOL (SCANPST.exe), which can be found inside C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\. See the picture below:

And again this may take an hour or two to finish repairing. You may encounter error along the way and it will ask you to make a backup copy of the reduced PST file, untick the (Make a backup). Click on Repair, wait a couple of minutes and the repairing process will be finished.

You are now all set to open the reduced PST file. Launch your Microsoft Outlook and Open the new pst file.

That's it.

Local Connection and Local Location

This may look easy for those Lotus Domino experts, but as for me it will be a good tool for future Lotus configuration, perhaps it would be best to articulate this to writing.

Apparently Dodo wants me to create an introduction pages for our project in UC English as Second Language which is of course a Lotus Notes based application. I have all my objects in Banilad (PDI) which needs some editing, so I guess it would be best to do the work directly to their server since I am done setting up the server two weeks ago. Here, I am showing you the steps on how to connect to a domino server remotely.

1. Assume that you have your Lotus Notes opened, click on Address Book ( your local contact window will launch e.g "dack's Address book ").

2. Click on Advanced Folder (objects will be displayed 1. Accounts 2. Certificates; 3. Connection ; 4. Location), click on Connection.

3. The Click New, select Server Connection.

You would see 3 tabs (basics, comments and advanced) to your basic tab you would see Connection Type, select Local Area Network. Add Server Name (e.g webserver/ucesl.

4. Next, Click Advanced Tab, key in the IP Address for Destination Server Address (e.g 125.252.84.74). Be sure to save this connection.

This time we will add Location:

5. Click on Location, and then select New and click Location.

6. On Basic Tab, type in Local Area Network for Location Type and be sure to name your location (e.g dacksucesl).

7. Then will go to Servers Tab, key in webserver/ucesl for your Home/mail server and Pass Thru Server.

8. To the Next Tab which is Mail, chose On Server for Mail File Location.

9. Mail file: mail\dacks.nsf

10. The last tab to edit would be Advanced, this is where you will locate your UserId (normally I save my ID to C:\Lotus\Data\)

11. Be sure to save this location document.

There you have it, all you have to do is switch your location everytime you want to connect to other server.

SETTING PATH ( RUBY)

The Ruby 1.8 installer for Mac OS X often leaves Ruby 1.6 the default. RESET CISCO Configuration!

If you're experiencing NVARM problem with your CISCO router (in our case we have this 2511 Model with 12.0(4) ios) better erase it (NVRAM) - execute write erase. Or better yet reset the configuration by executing the following steps:

1. Reboot the router, while the router loading Press Control+Break

2. then a prompt >, key in o/r 0x2142

3. then a prompt >, type i (this will tell your cisco to ignore its start-up configuration file from now on and reboot)

4. after reboot , it will ask you, if you want to configure the router, answer no

5. then a prompt >

6. >enable

7. #erase startup-config

8. #configure terminal

9. #config-register 0x2102

10. #exit

11. #reload

Since I've declined to initially configure the router. I knew that it's our router here in UC-Main campus that was having a problem. Since last week I keep on getting error on it's NVRAM.

Resetting the configuration of our router is the only option to do it. I stayed until 8:00 in the evening just to reconfigure the router, I've waited that the classes in our satellite campuses will be finished because they were having an online exam on CISCO. So at 7:10 I've reconfigured the router, here are the steps in doing it:

1. Reboot the router, while the router loading Press Control+Break
2. then a prompt >, key in o/r 0x2142
3. then a prompt >, type i (this will tell your cisco to ignore its start-up configuration file from
now on and reboot)
4. after reboot , it will ask you, if you want to configure the router, press no.
5. then a prompt >
6. >enable
7. #erase startup-config
8. #configure terminal
9. #config-register 0x2102
10. #exit
11. #reload

my staying late paid off, the router is now functioning properly.

For me Netscreen 50 Firewall is a very sophisticated networking device. So before I could actually do that I need to open the port of lotus domino on our netscreen 50 firewall, and the port is "1352". For me to do that I need to go to our web based Netscreen 50 address.

Then go to OBJECTS - - - click on SERVICES - - - and click on CUSTOM and then click NEW, to create a custom service. Specify the Service Name, so I named it Lotus Notes; on your SERVICE TIMEOUT --- chose Use Protocol Default. At the bottom you would see Transport Protocol--so chose TCP; then specify your Source Port -Low and -High your Low you can put (1) and on your High (65535) and then to your Destination Port -Low and -High, put the Lotus Notes Port which is 1352 on both LOW and HIGH. And then click ok. There you have your Lotus Notes Services. But we are not done yet in order for my friend to remotely access my domino server which is under DMZ, I still have to create a policy that would allow Untrust access to my InternetServers. To do that click on POLICIES then chose for your FROM:Untrust and for your TO:InternetServers. Click on new specify the source and destination, dont forget to indicate the Service which is: Lotus Notes.

So there you have it. I am talking about MRTG. I have my notes on how to install mrtg on redhat 7.1, this is way too old though. Since I have Fedora Core 4 installed then it would be great to place some of the configuration for future reference. My opening salvo would be Tobias Oetiker and Dave Rand's MRTG.

To have a perfect mrtg installation, these files are necessary --- (1)GCC and Perl, (these files are pre-installed on most linux system) and three vital libraries to make mrtg run (2) gd [gd-1.8.4.tar.gz] (this is basic graph drawing library created by Thomas Boutell)--- (3) libpng [libpng-1.0.15.tar.gz] (required by gd in order to produce PNG grahic files). --- (4) zlib [zlib-1.1.4.tar.gz] (is needed by libpng to compress the graphics files that is being created). --- (5) mrtg [mrtg-2.14.4.tar.gz ] (the mrtg itself). So there you go, you have the files and we are about to go!

Library Compilation

To download the files just execute "wget" and be sure to place your source files in /usr/local/src directory (after unzipping the source files i usually have a copy of them on my home directory just in case I have to reinstall the service, i hate the idea of downloading them again and again). After acquiring the libraries ,it is time to compile the libraries one by one. And once again compile them in /usr/local/src/ directory. Lets start first with zlib.

1) tar xzvf zlib-1.1.4.tar.gz
2) mv zlib-1.1.4 zlib
3) cd zlib
4) ./configure
5) make
6) cd ..

Next library to compile

1) tar xzvf libpng-*.tar.gz
2) mv libpng-* libpng
3) cd libpng
4) make -f scripts/makefile.std CC=gcc ZLIBLIB=../zlib ZLIBINC=../zlib
5) cd ..

We are now ready to compile that gd library.

1) tar xzvf gd-*.tar.gz
2) mv gd-* gd
3) cd gd
4) make INCLUDEDIRS="-I. -I../zlib -I../libpng" \
LIBDIRS="-L../zlib -L. -L../libpng" \
    LIBS="-lgd -lpng -lz -lm" \
CFLAGS="-O -DHAVE_LIBPNG"
5) cd ..

We are set to compile the mrtg!

1) tar xzvf mrtg-2.14.4.tar.gz
2) cd mrtg-2.14.4
3) ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mrtg-2 --with-gd=/usr/local/src/gd --with-z=/usr/local/src/zlib --with-png=/usr/local/src/libpng
4) make

We are half way to finish !

it's time to configure mrtg to monitor network device. So in my case here in UC we have 4 satellite campuses, I need to monitor the bandwidth utilization of our CISCO router serial interfaces. First things first, we need to determine the SNMP setting of the router, like for
instance our UC Banilad router's SNMP setting is UCICTC. let's hit it.

1) cd /usr/local/src/mrtg-*.*/bin
2) ./cfgmaker UCICT@172.23.251.170 >> ictc.cfg (UCICTC-is the SNMP setting,
172.23.251.170-the ip address of our serial interface,
ictc.cfg- the configuration file for UC Banilad Router)
3) executing ./cfgmaker would take awhile, then after cfgmaker getting the configuration file of your router, edit ictc.cfg

4) vi ictc.cfg (add this lines on the configuration:
WorkDir: /var/www/html/mrtg (this would depend to where your httpd is)
Interval: 5 (time interval of refresh
    RunAsDaemon: Yes
Options[_]: growright, bits (Uncomment this one)

5) After editing the configuration file, time to create Index file for the configuraiton.

Execute: ./indexmaker ictc.cfg (then the index file will be displayed and placed to the
work directory which is /var/www/html/mrtg

6) Execute: env LANG=C ./mrtg ictc.cfg
7) Add a line to your crontab file, so edit /etc/crontab and put this line below.

0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * /usr/local/src/mrtg-2.14.4/bin/mrtg /usr/local/src/mrtg-2.14.4/bin/ictc.cfg 1> /dev/null 2> /dev/null

So there you have it, just follow the instruction for other campuses. to check if you have mrtg working go to

http://192.168.1.100/mrtg/172.23.251.170_2.html.

If you think you are safe in upgrading your patches for your server(win2k), think again. I have just returned from our Mandaue campus, I was installing Lotus Notes r5(for teachers evaluation and ranking) and for some reasons I'm having hard time connecting to our server at our main campus. Changing my connection and location settings, but still it was no good, I can't think of any reason why I won't be able to connect to our server, and even copied the system configuration of the other workstations that has lotus notes application. Then I've decided to go back to our main office to check what was really going on. While we were driving I've realized that two weeks ago I've downloaded and intalled a new hotfix(patch so to speak) to our server. But hey this is an update , this should be good for my machine. Hesitant at first if I will remove and uninstall the patch, but I did unintall it. Then after a cool reboot, and open my internet explorer and now able to connect to our mail server. At last.

The point is, check that hotfix, patch, upgrade whatever you call it, if it's compatible to your platform or application before releasing that to your system. I have nothing against those who are particular about these patches but be sure to check it and have a back up or you should be responsible to what ever upgrades you have installed to your system.

POP that 3 ! ! !

Am I just being lazy or simply dumb. It took me about a year to know exactly what to do. Or perhaps I'm just to busy to the extent that I can't figure out what to do first. At last, I got it right, now I know how to configure that POP3 to our lotus domino server that YCG kept asking me. Of course the credit goes to Roy (the certified lotus notes user), my kumpare who have helped me set that thing up. Why the hell it didn't crossed my head....that work around on how to do it, well in fact it only needs some adding of IPs to the setting. I guess I'm just being paranoid, because we were once blocked to this ORDB.org for our mail server was being used for relays. WE suffered a very dragging mail server for two weeks because of that. After weeks, at last we were clean. The complains from the administration freaked me out. And that made me decide to disable the use of pop3 since then.

Now YCG asking for it, hell( as if I have a choice), what can I do? Good thing she was not asking for a dealine, on when could I implement such request. Browsing, googling, hoping that I might bump into a page that would put an end of this dilemma. She even commanded to call dodo whose apparently in singapore. It was basically a torture for myself..it was even hard to contact dodo, and to think that he's in singapore, how am I suppose to coordinate with him?..., plus the fact that he's way to expensive($hell) like everything he said should be equivalent of a big sum of bucks(grrr....ah well nothing is free in this world anymore I think). My fault, I admit it, why I didn't ask him this thing in the first place?....when he configured our domino server two years ago and installed that ranking system which is very buggy until now.

"Roy", screamed into my head, why not!...I called up roy whom I thought followed dodo in singapore..... lucky me he's leaving for singpore on november....He was such a great help, roy saved me from my misery(eheheeh). Just a couple of editing of Server configuration, specifically on Inbound rElay controls, I've added the IP addresses( Allow messages only from the following external internet hosts to be sent to external internet domains.....and delete the askterisk on Deny messages from the following external internet hosts to be sent to external internet domains:-) ). Did some reboots on our server(didn't mind who was online, I really had to). And tested it with my account and email my yahooo , it worked(pewwwwhhhh). But still it requires some great understanding , atleast you've encountered the lotus environment and more importantly make sure to backup the configuration(to be 101 percent sure, have an extra copy of your names.nsf, just in case).

My big thanks to Roy, for being patient the whole time we were in the phone talking... Darn I can't catch my favorite show (Power Ranger---Ninja Storm.....such childish punk....So what)! As if I had a choice, so I went to school.

It was true, they were not able to connect to the internet.
